plumbing & Filtration for aquariums in mishawakaRemember the scene in Finding Nemo where Nemo the clownfish adjusts to life in the aquarium in the dentist’s office? The aquarium was a weird, even nightmarish place, full of eccentric residents, like a compulsively clean crab. The most terrifying part of the aquarium, though, was the filter. It’s a good thing he didn’t know what a challenge it can be to keep the aquarium filter and plumbing working properly and how easily a filter malfunction can turn an aquarium into a truly unlivable environment.
There are several types of plumbing systems used in aquariums today. Having a functioning plumbing and filtration system is important, because it helps keep the water at the correct pH level, and it prevents the growth of algae, which can be lethal to the residents of your reef aquarium. Most reef aquariums (saltwater aquariums that contain live coral as well as fish and possibly shellfish) have a sump, which is a basin or pan into which water is filtered through a pump. The heaters and protein skimmers are usually located inside the sump, which is below the fish tank. Water is filtered through the sump pump and the fish tank either through soft plumbing or hard plumbing. Hard plumbing in an aquarium refers to pipes made of PVC (a type of hard plastic); hard PVC pipes are a series of straight pieces and joints connected in such a way as to prevent water from leaking out. Soft plumbing is the preferred plumbing type for reef aquariums today; it consists of vinyl tubes which can be more easily disconnected for maintenance than hard PVC pipes and which promote water flow more than the hard pipes, with their sharp turns, do. Setting up the plumbing and filtration system of an aquarium can be intimidating, but Michiana Fish Services is here to help. We can help you set up the plumbing and filtration system of any kind of aquarium, from a small living room aquarium that holds only six fish to a floor-to-ceiling coral reef ecosystem in your elegant restaurant, complete with LED lights.
